Boston’s Best Bars With A College Night

It’s no secret that many college students deal with some financial struggles, living most of their days just a few dollars from overdrafting their bank accounts. As such, where can the thrifty, thirsty college student go to forget the stress of an exam or to blow off some steam after finals? The answer is fairly predictable and simple: any bar with a college night. Luckily for them, many bars throughout the greater Boston area offer college nights, where drink specials and giveaways are the name of the game, in order to draw in as many parched collegiate types as possible. Here are just a few of the options available out there for those seeking some fun on a budget.

Conor Larkin’s Grill and Tap

Ask your average college student what one of the most important aspects of a good bar is, and the answer you’re most likely to receive is price, price, price. Conor Larkin’s Grill and Tap-located on Huntington Avenue at Opera Place fits that bill to a “T,” coincidentally enough, offering dirt cheap pitchers and drafts starting at $7 and $1.50, respectively. The odds are pretty good here that you’ll find plenty of Northeastern University students on hand to partake in these rock bottom-priced libations, with many students already packed in during broad daylight hours. If you’re up to braving the crowd, Conor Larkin’s is a broke college student’s oasis in a desert filled with overpriced alternative options.

Next to cheap booze, the second thing most often on struggling college students’ minds is from where their next next hot meal might be coming from. This makes Wednesday nights at the Crossroads Irish Pub a godsend. This Back Bay area spot offers free pizza with any pitcher purchase. This is close to manna from heaven for the student who’s finding it difficult to decide between spending their last few bucks on sustenance or that all-important next drink. Their trivia nights, helmed by an ultra friendly staff, only boost the ace reputation earned by the Crossroads as one of Boston’s best bang-for-your-buck college drinking experiences.

Punter’s Pub
450 Huntington Ave.
Boston, MA 02108
(617) 472-2330

Punter’s Pub is another Northeastern joint; a hangout located near the dorms that offers the usual distractions from college life: cheap pitchers, internet jukebox, darts, billiards and various arcade games like Big Buck Hunter and House of the Dead. Don’t go expecting Punter’s to mimic the same, comfortable grill/tap atmosphere of Conor Larkin’s. This one is a proud, dingy dive. There’s a certain level of pride that goes along with this tag – a reputation that doesn’t serve as a deterrent for any of the numerous college drinkers who come to Punter’s seeking that next good time. Oh, and while Punter’s may be a hole in the wall, that didn’t stop them from drilling their own hole in the wall into the adjoining House of Pizza, thus creating their own “Pizza in the Hole” concept.

Biddy Early’s
141 Pearl St.
Boston, MA 02110
(617) 654-9944

Located within the city’s financial district, Biddy Early’s proves quite popular amongst collegiate night owls as either a shenanigans launch pad or home base for various pub crawls. The $1.50 Pabst Blue Ribbon special is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the appeal of Biddy Early’s, an out-of-the-way dive that nevertheless manages to pack ‘em in elbow to elbow on most nights. It’s an off-the-beaten-path joint that still manages to ensure easy (for Boston, anyway) on street parking; a draw for both locals and visitors alike, where friendly staff make this humble pub seems just a little more comfortable.

For your final stop of the college life tour, head to the infamous Allston Rock City, a neighborhood where many-a-buzzed college students have found themselves at the end of a long, adventurous night out. The White Horse Tavern is a joint where no cover means the perfect price for broke-as-a-joke college kids who are still looking for a place to tilt their heads back while kicking their heels up. The White Horse manages to squeeze in a dance floor amidst all of their video games, pool, trivia and shuffleboard distractions, while their dirt cheap Saturday night drink specials practically ensure the White Horse as a college bar that doubles as a decent place to take a date.
